Low End Theory / What's Next?

Today I Learned

I LOVE music.

Gotta Plug

Last night, Low End Theory saved my life. In order to make up for my tardiness/poor planning of last week's The Glitch Mob show, I thought it would be fitting to make an additional trip to LA to the mecca of electronic music. After all, it would be The Glitch Mob's first performance together as a group at the venue, and seeing how they've been touring a lot, I figured this would be my best opportunity to see them in the next few months, or God knows how long.

I didn't really expect a lot out of this experience. I thought I would get there, and attempt to conceal my yawns listening to 'underground' / 'golden era' hip hop or whatever you want to call it, then be blown away by The Glitch Mob and call it a night.

Wow.

Boy, was I wrong. DJ Nobody and D-styles have made it to my MySpace list of friends.

The Mother Fucking Gaslamp Killer absolutely KILLED it. Why don't we let him play that shit in SD? Mary Anne Hobbs by way of the UK? Oh lord.

And last but not least:

Happy 30th Birthday edIT! Note to self: Trim nose hairs regularly.

What's Next?

I don't know how I'm gonna do it. I know it's gonna take a lot of work. And I know I can't do it alone. Psyphy is coming to SD.

NOSAJ THING / What the hell.

Today I Learned

A regular iced coffee at Coffee Bean gets three shots of espresso. I probably new that already.

Gotta Plug

NOSAJ THING. The other beautiful one man show. Another one of those glitch hop/psyphy artists that I am growing to love.

Also, a great article on downtown dj's playing what THEY want to play, featuring the likes of Ca$h Le Rok. Flip to page 44 of Riviera Magazine. (Takes a while to load.)

What the hell.

I keep having these wonderful dreams. And then I wake up, and try to endure the next 18ish hours of shit.

You Tell Concerts / Music

Today I Learned

This whole time I had mistaken Don King as the guy who was a victim of police brutality in Los Angeles in 1991.

Gotta Plug

YOUTELLCONCERTS.COM. Waiting in line for The Glitch Mob show, I overhear a few folks looking for tickets, and since I had three tickets that I wanted to get rid of, I thought, what the hell. Yes, $75 down the drain, but I made some new friends in the end. They happened to be members of this concert video review site, containing interviews from people leaving the venue. Um... Lorn, Abby and Bryan, and dude from Houston were there names (I think), and were there to see Sound Tribe Sector 9. While I'm not a humongous fan, it was incredible to see the reaction of the packed crowd... it was really different. Imagine electronic hippie jam music, and 99% of the hundreds of people on "hardcore street drugs."

Remember Lorn, you have to come to SD to review my first performance. Watch the ENTIRE video:

Music

So The Glitch Mob is everything I had imagined, but the experience was not. I got to The Wiltern right when the show started (9pm) and was already dreading the lines outside. Basically, the first 20 mins were spent figuring out which line went to Will Call. Where do you think Will Call would be? The ticket line, yes? If not, the booth adjacent, yes? No. The Will Call booth was inside the venue, past security, no signs. STUPID. So adamant was I to see the Glitch Mob that I stormed my way in past the entire crowd, even past the security blocking the floor area in which you needed an additional wristband to enter.

I only got to see them play two songs. While this trip may have seemed a waste of money to many, I'm glad I made the effort I did to see them and make some new friends along the way.

Time to make some music, and melt some faces.

Who else? / ABDC3

Today I Learned

I really figured out how to use 'position:absolute;' in CSS. Up until now I had been avoiding the property and finding some other way to position something out of its wrapping element consistently in all browsers.

What I realized is that in addition to having the element you want positioned absolutely (obviously), its wrapping element needs to have the 'position:relative' value as well! Now the coordinates you give your absolutely positioned element will be relative to the relatively positioned element, instead of flying all over the page!!!!!!!!!

Who else?

ABDC3

WOW. Way to kick off Season 3. Although I do think that it was lacking an encore performance from the show's winners in previous seasons.

Originally I thought there would be no one to challenge an all-star caliber group like Beat Freaks (although I admit, I had not even seen a performance by them as a group yet). But I really think that Quest Crew will give them a run for their money. Unfair it may seem to allow such accomplished and renowned dancers to enter such a contest... but that's what we're really looking for right? America's BEEEESSSSSSSSST Dance Crew. I think Lil' Mama put it best when she says, "You guys were very characteristic." HAAAH!

Whoever thought clogging would be so cool? Sorry friends, Dynamic Edition gets my vote this week. Seriously.

Novation ReMOTE 25 SL / Economic Re-awesome

Today I learned

That it's not always about the money.

Gotta Plug

The Novation ReMOTE 25 SL. This thing is a beast. Pricey, but worth every penny. Finally got a new one shipped to me from Musician's Friend after a lengthy ordeal with Guitar Center (a retailer that I no longer recommend or respect due to a lack of quality assurance). It's a long story, but basically, don't charge a customer full price for something that is opened, obviously used, and not containing everything that is listed on the box. Not even the warranty card. UNFORGIVABLE.

Understanding midi controllers has always been a fairly daunting task, yet in my very short experience with this piece of equipment, I have let go of all of my anxiety for reassigning high/low values, and changing button types and parameters. Nerd much? You betcha! Making sure that I understand and demonstrate mastery of every component on my instrument will be half of what separates me from Party Boy DJ. The other half? Content. Content is key. Hoping to expose San Diego to some new music. It's like I'm learning the guitar all over again.

Economic Re-Awesome

The past year has been a crazy one at work, but I have to always remember that this is happening to EVERYBODY. I'm very lucky to still be where I am at, and in light of all that has been happening, I'm proud to say that I'm very happy to be where I am at. I know that a lot will be expected of me in the next God knows how ever many months, but I'm ready for it. Ready to learn, and ready to turn some heads.

Manly love / Pots & Pans

Today I Learned

A ternary operator is a terse conditional statement, typically used to make an assignment on a single line of code.

Gotta Plug

If I'm not gay, why am I in LOVE with The Glitch Mob? Coincidentally, here's a live clip from their show in SF. Hurry before this clip is taken down.

Pots & Pans

Today I bought a 10-piece cookware set from JC Penny. As much as I would have liked to have put down a pretty penny for a nice professional set from B3 (Bed Bath and Beyond) or Crate and Barrell, I figured that those can wait while I hone my craft on lesser models. Hopefully these babies will last me a lifetime. What to cook first? Dunno, make a suggestion!
